Founded in 1891 as a science and technical institute, Drexel and its flagship College of Engineering is an academically comprehensive, globally engaged urban research institution located in the culturally dynamic city of Philadelphia. We have a historic priority of translating scholarship and research in the interests of community, industry, and the world around us.

Drexel is dedicated to providing every student with a rigorous, experiential, technology-infused education enriched by the nation’s premier co-operative education program. Our six engineering departments—chemical and biological engineering; civil, architectural and environmental engineering; electrical and computer engineering; engineering, leadership & society; materials science engineering; and mechanical engineering—offer 10 undergraduate majors, 19 graduate degree programs, and a variety of concentrations, both face-to-face and online. Nine of our degree programs are ABET-accredited.

Drexel’s co-op program is one of the oldest and most successful in the country, enabling our students to graduate with up to 18 months of paid, “real-world” industry and corporate experience through our 500-plus corporate relationships. As testimony to the success of our students, one out of every 100 engineers working in the U.S. today holds an undergraduate degree from Drexel’s College of Engineering.

Gone are the days of the isolated scientist laboring alone in a lab. Today’s research is collaborative research. Our renowned engineering faculty engages with colleagues across the country and across the world to offer our students the opportunity to tackle society’s Grand Challenges through the kind of entrepreneurial mindset exemplified by KEEN.

Why We're In KEEN
Through our partnership with KEEN and its prestigious network, we continue to enhance not only our reputation, but the critical entrepreneurial skills and creative mindset that industry demands and that the world needs from its engineers.

We foster that entrepreneurial mindset (EM) starting in the first term with our Introduction to Engineering Design class and continuing through to the Senior Design Capstone Project. Experiential learning is key to our EM development both within our curriculum and through extracurricular activities and cooperative education. Our students develop as successful, fulfilled professionals who know how to make connections in pursuit of excellence. And we will share information on best practices that benefit the next generation of engineers: versatile, creative leaders prepared to advance solutions in a convulsive world.

Showcase Work
ENGR 113: First-Engineering Design is centered around giving students a hands-on experience working on a team to develop a solution to an engineering problem.

By incorporating EM principles, students have the opportunity in their first year to use the 3C's as they develop a prototype of their design. Five of the faculty who teach this class revamped their modules to incorporate EM and publish cards on their work. This class and these faculty show EM in action.


Current Work
  • As part of the Collaborative Institutional Grant: Building Better Bridges Between Academia and Industry: Leveraging IPBs to Infuse Entrepreneurial Mindset (Project Unlock), we held a transformative session with the Construction Management Advisory Board on Sept. 21, 2023.

  • The project “Mini-modules for active learning: Collaboratively building an experience base for instruction in statistics” engaged faculty at 4 KEEN institutions (Drexel, ASU, and Ohio Northern, and RIT) to share and critique instructional materials used in undergraduate statistics class. The award was made to Patrick Gurian as part of his recognition by the Foundation as an Engineering Unleashed Fellow.   • New Faculty Orientation: We have incorporated a KEEN module into new faculty orientation so that they are aware of the available resources and opportunities to integrate EM into their courses and research experiences.

  • Graduate Students: With our graduate students being a key player as teaching assistants in laboratory courses, we held our first Engineering Unleashed for Graduate Students session to introduce them to available resources.

Previous Work


Here at Drexel, we regularly revisit what it means to be an engineer because the rules of the game are changing faster than anyone is able to canonize them. We also have an obligation to ensure the knowledge we transmit is grounded in meeting societal and global needs. We are therefore thrilled to be part of the KEEN network. We look forward to collaborating with our peer institutions to enhance all our students’ abilities to solve and transcend the engineering challenges of the 21st century.
